Mrs. James Lee Hit While Crossing Street in Front of Home
Face Crushed, Both Legs Broken and Injured Internally--Driver of Truck Failed to See Woman When Lights of Another Car Blinded Him--Not Held by Police
(Special to the Kennebec Journal)
Hallowell, Oct. 26--About 7.30 Sunday evening Mrs. James Lee was crossing the street, going from a neighbor's to her home on Wilder street and stepped between two cars, one of which, a Ford truck, struck her, breaking both legs, crushing her face and injuring her internally. She was taken at once into her house and Dr. J. D. Nutting summoned. Her injuries were such that she was taken to the Augusta general hospital, where she died about 9.30. Her age was 65.
According to the story of the night officer, who was summoned, and of various witnesses, the young man was going at a rate of from 15 to 20 miles. Another car was in front of him and a car coming in the opposite direction, with bright headlights, which prevented him from seeing Mrs. Lee when she stepped in front of the car. He turned back down town at once to find an officer and give himself up. He was not held.
