Two of Detroit's leading Negro surgeons and their women assistants were found guilty Tuesday of conspiring to commit abortions by a Recorder's Court jury of eight women and four men who deliberated three hours before reaching the verdict.
Released on $2,500 bond each are the four defendants. Dr. Edgar Keemer. 43. of 2075 W. Boston. and Dr. Gilbert Edwards 50. of 7740 LaSalle: their receptionists. Mrs. Labrentha Hurley. 34, of 1985 Calvert. and Mrs. Lollareta Swanson. 35. of 505 Kenilworth.
Twenty-one prosecution witnesses testified during the ten day trial that the doctors performed abortions. some times with the assistance of Mrs. Hurley in their offices, located at 8500 Fourteenth. They also testified that Mrs. Swanson cared for the most serious cases in the basement of her home.
The operation grossed some $3,000 a day in $200 and $400 fees from patients, said George D. Kent, Assistant Prosecutor.
February 4th is the day that Judge John P. O'Hara has set for sentencing the-four who face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
They were arrested last August by homicide detectives investigating a mother's report that her daughter had gone to the office for an abortion,
Arrested with them was Dr. Allison B. Hendersen, 45, of 662 Arden Park. who was acquitted of the charge.
