LOOKING AFTER THE CONTRABANDS.—The Clarksville Gazette, of the 9th, says: "An officer from Nashville arrived here a few days ago with orders from headquarters of this military department to gather up all the runaway negroes about here, who are not engaged in some regular employment, and put them to work on certain farms classed by the United States Government as abandoned.' Just now, we are told, they are being put to work on Major Harnum's and Brandon's places. This order has created quite a flutter among the darkies. It is another rude blow to their idea of freedom—masterly inactivity. Its execution will prove a great relief to the citizens, upon whose wood piles and meat-houses many of these negroes have been subsisting. We hope it will be rigorously enforced. If the negroes can't be sent home to their masters, let them at least be put to work here."
