WILL BE GUESTS
AT TEXTILE MILL
The cotton growers of Southern California are being offered an opportunity to visit a textile mill and to see what happens to their product at the other end of the line.
On Saturday afternoon, August 23, beginning at 1:30, the Goodyear Textile mill at Los Angeles will be host to the cotton growers and will conduct them through the mill and show the method by which raw cotton is made into tire fabric.
Since the mill does not ordinarily operate on Saturday afternoon everything will be arranged so as to show the inside working of each process. Some of the machines will be working with operators in attendance while others will be dismantled to show what the inside looks like. The growers will be divided into small groups and each group will be personally conducted through the plant by a competent guide who will explain the details of operation.
Preceding the tour of the mill there will be a discussion of mill tests that have been made by the federal department of agriculture.
These tests have been made to show the effect of certain growing practices in irrigated districts on the value of the lint for manufacturing purposes. Cotton from alkali fields, fields irregularly and insufficiently irrigated, fields following alfalfa, and other variable conditions has been run through the mill in separate lots to determine its value for spinning purposes. The results of these tests should be of value to growers, buyers, and millers since they will give a more definite basis upon which the relationship can be determined between cultural practice and the quality of the lint.
P. L. Kennedy of the U. S. department of agriculture will discuss these tests.
Since the mill is the ultimate consumer of the raw cotton, the problems of the millers are to a large extent the problem of the growers.
The meeting in Los Angeles will be an opportunity for a better understanding of these mutual problems and should be of great interest to the growers of cotton in the valley.
The arrangements for the meeting are in the hands of the extension service and the farm bureau cooperating with the U. S. department of agriculture and the Goodyear textile mills.
The textile mills are located at 6901 South Central avenue, Los Angeles.
