To the Freeholders of Berkeley County, on the Opequon.

My good Friends,

As on all former occasions, divided hospitality between the inhabitants of the upper and lower side of Opequon. I have been much astonished and distressed of late, at the little apathy into which we are fallen. Lower side. Will nothing rouse you? Have you not observed the repeated proffers of service, as representative, made by a certain Physician on the other side, whose natural abilities we all acknowledge--to which a long experience in the office of law has added greatly. Now, my friends, what will be the consequence, if this cunning, artful man, should go from the opposite side without having a proper person on this side to espouse as he is going for the express purpose of amend the laws. Shall we not be neglected? Perhaps it will be said, he will have our interest as much at heart as theirs, having been on some occasion very ill used, and it is said, drove out of the county by them; but the honor they will confer on him, will make amends--besides, let me observe, the nature of spaniel is not confined to dogs. My natural modesty, which you are all acquainted with, has thereby prevented very public offers of service, having waited for the solicitations of my fellow citizens-but humbly conceive I have my unsolicited service, as the Doctor at, without vanity. I think myself as fit for his colleague, as any person below the creek. It is true, I am not so well acquainted with Watts's Hymns as he is, but there is another part of my education which is superior to his--I mean the part I received at Ball more.

It is true, he may in time, acquire a similar tuition, as it is said, there is a seminary shortly to be erected at Richmond.

No doubt some pretended virtuosos may, with hypocritical faces, try to prejudice weak minds against us both, by observing that very strict laws would not bind either of us but I suppose you will allow us the general privilege granted to law-makers in Virginia, of being law-breakers. If we should have influence enough to change all your bad laws for good ones, certainly you will allow us to live as we list afterwards.

I shall conclude with a general recommendation to my fellow-citizens, to come forth on the day of election and give their votes to those important trust.

If I should be their choice. they may rely on the utmost exertion of my abilities in their service : if not I shall be happy to find there is a fitter person for that office than myself.

CORNELIOUS CONHY.
