Full Text

From a Late London Paper.

Singular contest between two French Ladies:

The lady of the Auditor of Accounts and that of the Treasurer of France, meeting in their coaches in a narrow street in Paris, with a design to go through it, and there not being room to pass each other, there was a necessity for one to put back, to give the other way, which neither would be persuaded to do; so they remained firm in the same place, from 6 o'clock in the morning till noon, when they sent their servants for hay and corn for their horses, and ordered their dinners to be brought into their coaches. The novelty drew a number of gazers, every one being curious to see what would be the issue of such punctilios: at length a cart load of wine coming to a merchant who lived in that street, and finding it could not, for their obstruction, get to his house, either one way or the other, about 2 o'clock in the afternoon went to the Commissary of the Quarter (like our Justice of the Peace) to desire him to remedy the disorder. The Commissary observing the ladies obstinately resolved neither of them to give way, and not being willing to affront them, out of respect to their husbands, found out an expedient to settle the affair, without disobliging either, which was to make both coaches put back at the same time, so that neither of them should drive into the same street again. The accommodation was accepted, and performed to the extremest of niceties: the ladies being weary of the trouble they had run themselves into by standing on their punctilios, quietly retired, each with the satisfaction that she had preserved her honor.
