James P. Gleason of Silver Spring, Maryland Republican candidate for the United States Senate, has charged Samuel Hopkins, Baltimore City GOP chairman, with "prejudicial treatment" of Gleason's campaign workers in that city.
Simultaneously announcing the opening of his Baltimore headquarters, at 2422 North Charles st., the Silver Spring attorney telegraphed the accusation that Gleason-for-Senator volunteers are being denied Republican voter registration lists which they need immediately.
Gleason's Baltimore committee is now being organized with the principal purpose of canvassing registered voters to turn out for the May 15 primary elections.
In a night letter to the head of the Republican committee in Maryland's largest city, Gleason said:
"I am advised that my campaign assistants in Baltimore are receiving prejudicial treatment from you in their efforts to obtain registered Republican voters' lists. I protest these unfair tactics on your part to deprive me of lists necessary to my campaign. State Chairman Rinehart and the party's executive committee have endorsed an open primary. An open primary is impossible unless candidates can inform the voters personally of their experience and platform. I intend to win Baltimore's 42 unit votes on May 15 and so that you may be aware of the response to my Senatorial candidacy, I invite you to attend the opening of my Baltimore headquarters."
