President Taft is still wielding the big stick over the tariff conferees. He insists on free hides. but seems to be satisfied with the outrageous woolen schedules that were framed in the interest of the woolen manufacturers. If the cattlemen were as well organized as the sheepmen and the woolen manufacturers. President Taft might not yell so loudly for free hides. The latest reports from the tariff conferees are to the effect that an agreement is doubtful. Hides is the bone of contention. Western Senators insist that boots and shoes and all leather shall go on the free list if hides go there. Taft has a very big fight on his hands.
