While Nogales, Tombstone, Bisbee and Douglas are apparently making no strong effort to keep the state national guard encampment site in southern Arizona, Flagstaff is destined to be selected, and the site moved from Garden Canyon near Fort Huachuca, according to a telegram sent by Governor J. C. Phillips to the editor of the Coconino Sun at Flagstaff, reading as follows:
"During my visit at the encampment last week (held the latter part of August) I was informed by one of the officers that their indorsement favored Flagstaff as a permanent location. Since my return I have not had an opportunity to discuss this matter with Colonel Pomeroy or any of the officers".
The Flagstaff paper goes on to say that climate is one of the reasons why Flagstaff is favored, the article stating that "very few, if any, of the national guard officers, favor retaining Fort Huachuca's encampment site, chiefly because of the terrific heat almost invariably encountered during the encampment period. The encampment is all the vacation many of the men get, and taking them to a place where no one would ever go for a summer vacation, is not conducive to the popularity of the encampment idea".
Fort Huachuca, situated in a high altitude, has a climate very similar to Prescott, and near there are Ramsey Canyon and other summer resorts where hundreds of southern Arizona people annually spend the hot months.
