We have been greatly favored [says the editor of the Essex Register] by the bill of mortality for Portsmouth, N.H. for 1807, by Lyman Spalding, M.D.

The attention which this gentleman has paid to this subject, and his success and accuracy, have made his example worthy of imitation, and have given a value to his communications. His bills of mortality, and the meteorological tables of New-London, have been the best things of this nature in New-England.

Dr. Spalding gives Portsmouth in lat. 43, 5, N. and 6, 21, E. from Washington, with 7000 inhabitants. He remarks that on 23d Jan. 1807, the thermometer was 10 minus, and on 26th. 13 minus-the coldest weather ever recorded in the town. Between the 23d and 26th the Influenza appeared, and subsided early in May. The influenza returned in the middle of August, paring some, and disappeared in December. The whole number of deaths is 119, 30 by consumption, and 13 by fevers of different names. The highest number of deaths was in September.

The births were 284, 151 males and 133 females, and the marriages 62.

Ten are recorded as dying of old age, and 17 above 70, and one above 90 years of age. Ten of those who died above 70, died of old age, without particular disease, in the course of nature. One even lived till seventy, which may be a standard of great natural health and longevity.
