BOSTON, February 24.

TRIAL of a LIBEL.

On Tuesday morning last, came on before the Hon. the justices of the supreme judicial court, the trial of Edmund Freeman, printer of the Herald of Freedom, &c. for a libel, published in that paper, the 2d. of February, 1790, on John Gardiner, Esq. of Pownalborough.

[A tedious trial ensued, some particulars of which in a future paper.]

Yesterday morning the jury on the trial of Edmund Freeman, brought in their verdict not guilty.

The person supposed to have been injured by the innocent piece in the Herald of Freedom, of the 2d of February 1790, we hear, is now about to commence a civil action against Mr. Freeman, the Editor of that paper, for an infamous libel against John Gardiner, Esq. and intends to put to a jury of the county of Lincoln, whether he be, or not, entitled to any reparation for his supposed injury? When the poor ignorant yeomen of that county, will be called upon to say, upon their oaths, whether language has any meaning, and whether a man's being charged with murder means that he did not intentionally kill, or shorten the days of another.
