Full Text

The following communication is from a unknown source. In giving it publicity, we are actuated by two motives: one of which is, to counteract the Argus statement; and the other is, with a hope the allusions in the latter part of it will be better understood in York county than by us.

MR. SHIRLEY,

The gentleman who handed the Saco Resolutions to the editor of the Argus, has attempted to extend his influence and his political errors, beyond the citizens of his own town; and has stated that those resolutions passed by a majority of 200 to 19. (meaning probably 18). It is estimated that there were 150 inhabitants present, and 42 of them polled off, and were numbered against the resolutions, as they were put up in gross. Though with their fourth resolution we might, from unhappy experience say, 'that we are led from a general observance of passing events, to suspect that an undue influence prevails in our county, hostile to the liberties of the people, and in opposition to their true interest.' But that such influence arises, from a legion of demagogues, who in the shape of democrats and jacobins, have possessed some of our citizens, (seven towns in number,) as the devils did Mary Magdalene; from a President popular, without continuing to deserve it; four heads of departments with tongues to confound Babel itself; and from a triumphant majority in Congress who feel power, but forget right; trying what they can do to distress, rather than what they ought to do to relieve

Main Argument

disputes the argus's report of saco resolutions passing by a 200 to 19 majority, clarifying only 150 were present with 42 against, and attributes suspected undue influence to demagogues, democrats, a undeserving president, departmental heads, and a power-abusing congress hostile to people's liberties.
