Full Text

The idea that certain leaders of the 3d party would give Polk a victory in some of the northern States, seemed to prevail at the South to some extent before the election. It was a matter of congratulation at Washington that they held out for Birney, to the last. The heroes of Annexation have been gratified in their anticipations in one or more important States. The following is from a Southern Polk print issued before election:

"If this third party, or the Abolitionists of the North, will vote for Birney, the Democracy have nothing to apprehend, for New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio will be carried triumphantly."

They failed in Ohio—where, unless we are misinformed upon the subject, Mr Birney and other leaders used their utmost to carry their party as they did in N. York—viz. indirectly for Polk and annexation. But they did up the business sufficiently in N. York—Birney's three weeks Lecturing there before election gave the victory to the Slave-party of the Union.—The curses of tens of thousands of enslaved human beings will rest upon the heads of the Birneys, the Leavitts, and Millers, who have forged eternal fetters for them and their fellows.
