Union College, May 3, 1798.

Yesterday the annual commencement of this college was held in the Dutch church, at which a very respectable audience (among whom were his excellency the governor, and his honor the Lt. governor) attended. The whole business of the day was conducted in such manner as to do honor to the President, and Preceptors, and the Students of the college.

The degree of bachelor of arts was conferred on Joshua Forman, Morris S. Miller, Alexander M'Leod, Henry Oothout, Reuben Sears and John Nash Smith.

The degree of master of arts was conferred on the Rev. Alexander Proudfit, a graduate of Columbia college, and a minister of the associate synod; and on Mr. Andrew Yates, a tutor in college, and graduate of Yale College.

The degree of doctor of laws was conferred on Peter Wilson, Esq. professor of languages in Columbia college.

At the late meeting of the trustees, Dr. H. Vanden Heuvel was chosen professor of natural philosophy and astronomy.

The apparatus for the use of the college, lately arrived from Europe, is very complete, as to the accuracy and elegance of the instruments.
