MARITIME UNIONS SEEKING BOYCOTT
Appeal To World Federation For Support In Coming Strike
WASHINGTON, June 2.=(U.P.)-
Seven strike-threatening maritime unions appealed to the World Federation of trade unions Sunday for a world-wide labor boycott of American ships if the government tries to keep them sailing with Naval personnel or non-union seamen during the work stoppage.
In a cable to WFTU Executive Secretary Louis Saillant in Paris, that union's strike committee said that "possibilities for successful negotiations seriously jeopardized, and employers given every encouragement to avoid settlement."
Blame President
The committee-headed by President Joseph Curran of the National Maritime union (CIO) and President Harry Bridges of the Longshoremen and Warehousemen's union (CIO)-said that this condition had been brought about by President Truman's threat "to use armed forces to smash the maritime strike" now scheduled to begin June 15.
In the event negotiations fail," they cabled, "we ask maximum support in strike by refusal to work ships manned by government and declared scab ships with the exception of troop and relief ships as we determine them."

Meanwhile, the government won
its first break in its efforts to avert
a strike when the unions involved
modified their demands. Sources
close to the negotiations said the
unions had submitted several coun-
ter-proposals.

Both the labor groups and em-
ployers met separately with fed-
eral mediators Sunday. When the
meetings broke up at 7 P.M. EST..
Edgar L. Warren, head of the Fed.
eral Conciliation service, said the
unions had presented more details
on their demand for a 40-hour work
week for their members.

The meetings will be resumed
Monday at 11 a.m.
