Extract of a letter from a gentleman at Washington City, to his correspondent in this town, dated Feb. 12, 1817.
"This day, being the second Wednesday in February, next succeeding the meeting of the Electors, the time fixed by law for opening and counting the votes of President and Vice-President, and for declaring the same, agreeably to the 12th amendment to the Constitution, the Senate, at 12 o'clock, agreeable to resolution, joined the House of Representatives in their hall. The President of the Senate then opened the certificates of lists of persons voted for, which were transmitted by the Electors of all the States. On being counted by joint committee, there were for JAMES MONROE, for President of the United States, 183 votes—for Rufus King, for President of the United States, 34 votes. DANIEL D. TOMPKINS, for Vice-President, 183 votes—and for four other candidates 34 votes. Whole number of votes 217—making a choice—JAMES MONROE, having a majority of 149 for President, and DANIEL D. TOMPKINS having a majority of 149 for Vice-President, were accordingly, by the President of the Senate, declared duly elected to serve in those stations, for four years, from the third of March next."
