Full Text

Yesterday the first Constable of the town of Burlington, Mr. Samuel Huntington, received a call from Mr. L. S. Drew, of the American Hotel, to ascertain his views on the prohibitory liquor law. He said in substance that a meeting of sundry persons had been held at the American Hotel, and a ticket for town officers agreed upon, except constable: that if he, Mr. Huntington, would favor an alteration of the law so as to introduce a license system, they were ready to support him for first constable; otherwise they should take up a candidate who would. He assured Mr. Huntington that there was no personal hostility to him, nor objection on any other account,—that the whole matter turned on his views as to the prohibitory law. Mr. Huntington assured Mr. D. in the most emphatic manner that he went for the rigid enforcement of the law, without fear or favor, and not for any change of it for a license system.—Burlington Free Press.

A meeting at the American Hotel discussed town officer candidates, excluding constable. L. S. Drew informed Samuel Huntington that support for his reappointment as first constable depended on favoring a license system over the prohibitory liquor law. Huntington emphatically supported rigid enforcement without alteration.
