In the House of Representatives of the United States, on the 1st inst. in committee of the whole, on the ways and means, Mr. Sherburne in the chair, two resolutions were read; one, that a tax of 5 cents per 100 dollars be laid on every transfer of stock in the public funds: the second, that a similar tax be laid on transfers of stock in any of the other banks of the United States. The 1st, after a long debate, was carried in the affirmative, 53 rising in favor of the motion. The 2d was unanimously agreed to.
A resolution was then read, for laying a duty of 4 cents on all Tobacco, and 8 cents per pound on all Snuff, manufactured in the United States. This resolution, after a long discussion, was also, next day, decided in the affirmative; Yeas 59. Nays 34. The product of this duty, in the report of the select committee, is estimated at 100,000 dollars.
