to Deceive the People a Failure—
Situation in New
York.
New York,
Nov. 5.—The preparations
necessary for
the
election
contest which
occurs tomorrow
have
all been made.
Lines are drawn and the battle will open
with the Republicans confident of victory.
Advices received today
from all parts of
the country are of the same tenor. They
indicate
that
some
surprising
result
will take
place in
the
most
un-
expected quarters. The Democrats have
been doing their utmost to delude the
workingmen with their free trade scheme,
but it is evidenced from the news received
here that the workingmen have at last got
their eyes open to the true state of affairs.
In this city it is confidently predicted that
Cleveland's majority will be much less than
even conservative Democrats believe. The
bitter internecine war in this city has
shown its disastrous results in the last few
days. There is going to be more trading
between the Democratic factions than was
never known before. The National and
State committees have been doing their
best to stop the fight, but each faction is
going to save itself in local politics at the
expense of the National, and in some in-
stances the State ticket. It is whispered
around tonight that each Democratic fac-
tion is supplied at the polls with Republican
electoral ballots; that these electoral ballots
would be bunched with the Democratic
State and faction city tickets, and that the
district managers had received word to trade
a Democratic vote for Republican electoral
ticket wherever a Republican vote could be
secured for the faction's city ticket. The
Democratic managers got wind of this
scheme early this evening, and have been
doing everything to prevent its being car-
ried out. So far their efforts have been
without avail. The leaders of the different
factions openly state that the election of
their County ticket is of greater importance
than the election of a dozen National tick-
ets,
This ugly feeling has been
brought about through the orders
said to have emanated from Grover
Cleveland. The government employes here
stand by Tammany
Hall, and when the
County Democracy, who nominated Cleve-
land at Chicago, heard of this, they adopted
the only possible scheme to save their or-
ganization from extinction, as the evi-
dence in the possession of the County
Democracy as to Cleveland's advice is said
to be very authentic. They decline to make
any change in their programme, or rather
state that there is no such programme. If
any
monkeying is to be done it
will be by the Tammany
men.
There was a private consultation of the
members of the National Committee early
today and a committee was appointed to
see what could be done to save the
slaughter of the National ticket. This
committee has been to work all the
evening and the only result reached or the
only satisfaction received has been in about
these words "We are right. It is the
other fellows' doings." Nevertheless there
is a great deal of uneasiness in
Democratic circles tonight. Where hope
existed before it seems to be now
clear that the ticket will be badly beaten in
the State. Even bets have been made in a
quiet way that 3,000 will be the Democratic
plurality over the Republicans in the city
of New York, and that Kings county won't
give over 11,000 for the Democratic electoral
ticket. Should this be the result it would
mean the carrying of the State by the Re-
publicans, as it is confidently predicted that
their ticket will come to Harlem river with
between 50,000 and 60,000 plurality, which
will give the Republican ticket a plurality
between 15,000 and 18,000 in this State.
There was a great deal of betting in Wall-st.
today, and one wager of $10,000 even was
made and covered that Harrison would be
elected.
