The House yesterday refused to suspend the rules (it requiring two-thirds) to take up the important resolution offered by Mr. HAMER on Saturday. The vote stood 110 for and 61 against, falling only A FEW VOTES short of two-thirds.
We congratulate the country on the prospect of the passage of this resolution through the House by a large majority. The principle once established, it will serve as the basis of wholesome legislation on the subject to which it refers. Mr. Hamer's explanation in regard to the insertion and subsequent striking out of the words, "as the administration designs to do," will be found in our report of the proceedings.
The vote on this resolution has sifted the real Destructives from those who are willing to extend to the banks the countenance of the Government, "in their laudable efforts to resume specie payments." Thank heaven, the destructive party in the House is shown to be harmless. The relative proportion they bear to the friends of the people, is only as 1 to 2.
The responsibility they have taken in resisting all attempts to favor the resumption of specie payments, and the return of confidence and prosperity, will be more than they can bear, when they meet their constituents face to face. We make the prediction—not a man of them, (except by accident) will ever again be trusted with a seat in Congress.
We were happy to find all but one of the Connecticut delegation, and Messrs. Bronson, Foster, Gray, Pratt, and Prentiss, of N. York voting with Mr. Hamer. We trust the resolution will be carried through with alacrity, and that the House will sustain Mr. Hamer in his patriotic effort. We may assure the country of one thing: the resolution is proposed by one whose firmness, perseverance, ability and moral courage need not be distrusted.
