The Morehouse College and Florida A. and M. University baseballers divided a heated doubleheader, Saturday afternoon, at Atlanta University field. The Orange and Green Rattlers won the first game, 6-5 and the Maroon Tigers the second game, 5-3.
Vic Newman promising young southpaw from Atlanta's Henry McNeal Turner High, started on the mound for the Rattlers in the first game and had a no-hitter going until the seventh, when the Maroon Tigers staged a four-run rally.
Newman retired 15 batters in a row, holding the Tigers scoreless unless the sixth, when he walked James Young, the Morehouse hurler. Young advanced and scored on two long outfield pops by Lyndon Wade and Ted Sparks.
CLENDENON CLOUTS GRAND SLAM HOMER
Then in the seventh, after Primus and Billy Leggett got on base successive errors, George Ross walked to load the bases, Donn Clendenon promptly clouted a grand slam home run over the rightfield fence to highlight a four-run rally.
Blasting out extra base hits for Florida were Evans, who hit a two run home run in the sixth and Edwards with a neat triple in the fourth. Newman and Garner, who relieved him in the seventh, limited Morehouse to three hits, and Young spaced seven hits while going the distance for Morehouse.
Florida pumped out front in the second game with two runs in the first and a single run in the second but Morehouse again staged a late rally and this time wrapped up the win, 5-3. Evans, Grant and Edwards led the Florida attack with three two-base hits.
In the fifth, Wade walked and after John Johnson beat out an infield hit, Booker Howell also got a base on balls and Legett clean the sacks with a three-run double. Ross followed with a single.
Wade went all the way for Morehouse, while James Carmichael, another promising moundsman from Atlanta's Henry McNeal Turner High, who was also replaced by Garner in the fifth, hurled for Florida. The hits were even at five each.
