MR. EDITOR:--In the last Spirit I notice my name announced as a candidate for the office of Sheriff, subject to the decision of the Democracy at their primary election. For this manifestation of good-will on the part of some of my friends I am truly grateful; and should I be so fortunate as to be entrusted by the people with the duties of this office, I pledge myself no efforts on my part shall be wanting to discharge them faithfully and impartially. I have been a citizen of Monroe county from my early boyhood, and am therefore known to a large number of her voters. This fact renders it unnecessary for me to canvass the county soliciting the people for their suffrages--"a custom more honored in the breach than in the observance," and especially with me, when it is considered that upon my daily labor my family depend for their support.

Fellow Citizens, into your hands I commit my claims, satisfied that you will do what you think for the best. Should your choice fall upon me I will be truly thankful, if upon some other good and true man, I will be content.

ROBERT S. HUTCHESON.
