CAMPBELL TALKS

Representative Says He Did Not Consider Report a Repudiation of Governor.

EXPLAINS HIS VOTE ON IT

Claims Adoption Was Only Expedient Way of Disposing of Matter and Firing Committee.

In view of the fact that Representative Thomas Campbell voted for the adoption of the Hill report on state institutions in the lower house, thus condemning Governor Deneen's administration, has created much comment here, Mr. Campbell was today interviewed on the subject by an Argus representative. It will be remembered that Mr. Campbell was one of the advance guard of the reception committee which met the governor at Milan, on the occasion of his recent visit to Rock Island, thus adding to the interest in his view of the matter.

Says It's Not a Repudiation.

Mr. Campbell denied that in his vote he had intended to be a party to repudiating Governor Deneen. "I think that report does not so severely criticise the governor after all," he said. "The question was simply one of disposing of the report, and getting rid of the committee," he added. "There was no fight made on the report, and even the governor's friends, some of them, voted for the adoption of the report.

Thinks It Unfair.

"For my part I think the investigation to have been unfair in some respects," said Mr. Campbell. He criticised the action of the committee in not making a comparison with former administrations, and in not according the administration side a hearing. He maintained that he does not entirely approve of the report, but that it was necessary to dispose of it or stay in session at Springfield all summer. "I think that the state institutions are run as well now as they ever have been-perhaps better," said Mr. Campbell.

Mr. Campbell's attention was called to the fact that there was much criticism by republicans of this action, and he replied, "Yes, I know that. But those who criticise do not appreciate the situation."
