The Perpetrator of a Crime in 1867 Just Arrested.—In the year 1867 the house of Ira Herring, an aged and respectable citizen in the town of Hoosick, was entered one evening by two burglars. Ira himself and wife gagged and the house robbed of a considerable amount of property. The aged couple were alone in the building, and when the robbers departed they left them still confined. When their condition was discovered the next morning they were nearly dead from fright and exhaustion. Suspicion pointed to a man named Gardner Wood or Woodward, who shortly afterwards disappeared and was not positively heard from again until last night, when District Attorney Banker received a despatch from Whitehall announcing his arrest in that place by officer Lavera. The District Attorney had previously heard rumors to the effect that he was in the vicinity of Whitehall, and took the necessary means to arrest him in case he was there. We are happy to know they were successful, for the crime which Woodward committed upon an old and inoffensive couple was a most heinous one and deserves the severest punishment.—Troy (N. Y.) Times, March 30.
