Morris Brown And Allen
Battle To 0-0 Deadlock

By JOEL W. SMITH
Superb defensive play gave the
strong Allen U. Yellow Jackets
from Columbia, S. C., a scoreless
tie with the Morris Brown College
Purple Wolverines, Saturday after-
noon, before
a
large crowd,
at
Ponce De Leon Park.
The Wolverines' inability to cash
in on several scoring opportunities
may be attributed to the all-around
brilliant play of the scrappy Allen
line, plus the fact that Morris
Brown's inexperienced backs could
not muster enough scoring punch
to strike pay dirt.
The game got underway
with
John Hunter of Allen kicking off
to Adams, Wolverine end,
who
fumbled and Henry Simmons
recovered for Allen. Allen's offensive
drive was halted when Frederick
Shepherd intercepted a Yellow Jac-
ket pass and returned it to the
Morris Brown 38-yard marker.
WOLVERINES OPEN
OFFENSIVE DRIVE
After an exchange of punts Irwin
Greene, Morris Brown fullback
penetrated the Allen forward wall
for a first down on three plays into
the line for the initial first down of
the game. The Wolverines chalked
up another first down a few minutes
later when Henry Veal, half-
back, circled end for a 14 yard gain.
The Wolverines made two more
first downs in the second period,
the first on a forward pass inter-
ference and the second resulted
from a 12-yard run by Lee Monroe.
Fullback Greene tossed a perfect
pass to Cleveland Lane who let it
slip thru his fingers just before the
half ended.
The Wolverines first real scor-
ing opportunity came in the third
period when Morris Brown linemen
partially blocked Hunter's punt on
Allen's 1-yard line. Henry Harris
lost 10 yards on the first play from
scrimmage, and John Fisher passed
to Lane for a 0-yard gain on the
next play. The Allen line tightened
and the ball went over on downs.
A
few
minutes later, Morris
Brown worked the ball to the Allen
10-yard line, but again failed to
score. The Wolverines opened an-
other offensive drive in the fourth
period which was halted when Sim-
mons intercepted a pass on his own
10-yard line.
OPEN UP WITH PASSES
In the closing moments of the
game, both teams opened up with
passing attacks. Greene intercepted
an Allen pass on the Morris Brown
45-yard stripe and Anderson re-
taliated for the Yellow Jackets
by
intercepting a Wolverine pass.
Both lines played well which is
a credit to Coaches Graves, Lock-
hart and Thompson of Morris
Brown, and Coach Lawson of Allen.
Greene, Monroe and David Young-
el were outstanding in the Morris
Brown backfield while Captain Jo-
seph Mathis
and
John
Hunter
played well for Allen. Morris Brown
chalked up six first downs against
two for the visitors.
