ANOTHER SLANDER EXPOSED
The foes of the President have not only slandered him personally, but have followed every member of his household and every one of his relatives with most shameful falsehoods. One by one these malicious stories are satisfactorily denied. One of the President's relatives repeatedly traduced, is his brother-in-law, Hon. Mr. Cramer, United States Minister to Copenhagen. The most outrageous stories have been circulated about him, and because uncontradicted were often believed. Now, however, comes a denial of these stories from a source entirely impartial and entitled to implicit confidence. Noticing these slanders, the Copenhagen press, without exception, positively and in detail deny the slanders and pronounce them "false from beginning to end." The official Tidende says: "They are absolutely groundless. Mr. Cramer is on the best terms with our government, and, from what we hear, fills his position most creditably."
The Copenhagen Dagbladet of May 17th says, in reference to these charges: "After a thorough investigation of the charges preferred against Mr. Cramer, we herewith pronounce them fictitious from first to last. There is no member of the diplomatic corps in this city who enjoys a higher share of general esteem than the American Ambassador, and we simply give expression to the sentiments of those who have been brought into contact with him, that there is in this capital of Denmark no gentleman but esteems it an honor to hold intercourse with Mr. Cramer."
The Copenhagen Flyveposten and the Deutsch Zeitung express similar sentiments. These are newspapers published in the capital of Denmark, and their contradiction of these slanders so unequivocally made only forms another link in the chain of evidence, proving that the President has, from the beginning of his administration, been beset by an unscrupulous crowd of slanderers, who stop at nothing, and seem determined to lie about him, to break down, if possible, the good name he has so justly won.
