We heard a few days ago, that it was intended to submit in Congress a motion to recede to the State of Virginia so much of this district as formerly was a part of that State. We then supposed this suggestion to have arisen out of a momentary vexation at the contumely heaped on the District, a few days ago, by a Representative from Virginia (Mr. Randolph) in a debate respecting the District. From the following article, however, which we find in an Alexandria paper of Friday, it is presumed there are some who seriously entertain the idea of recession.
FROM THE ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE.
MR. SNOWDEN,
The expediency of adopting measures, to obtain a recession of that part of the District of Columbia, south of the Potomac, to the State of Virginia, has been formally submitted in your paper of the 11th inst. to the consideration of the citizens of Alexandria county. It is sincerely hoped, the subject will receive that prompt and earnest attention, to which its importance entitles it. It is certainly time for us to enquire into the conduct of those who have assumed the management of our affairs, and to devise the means of escape from the dangers of their mis-rule. We may justly complain that we are taxed, without being represented; that we are wrongfully and injuriously restricted in the right of appeal; that the interests of this part of the District are postponed or made subservient to the views and interests of the favorites in Washington and Georgetown; that our petitions are disregarded; our importance underrated, and that unpardonable indifference is uniformly manifested by Congress to our wishes and our welfare. These are wrongs which surely do require redress, and that redress, it is humbly conceived, is within our power. Let us petition to be abandoned altogether by our careless step-mother, and restored to our natural mother. The permission will, it is believed, be readily granted, and we shall, without doubt, be as readily received by our native state.
