Full Text

The Boston papers, for some time past, have teemed with accounts of splendid military reviews, of the great order and discipline of the Massachusetts militia, and the Governor's tour through the District of Maine. Some of the southern papers have thought proper to cast a slur upon our Boston neighbors, which has roused the ire of one of their editors, who says, "No state in the Union had so many troops in constant readiness, were more zealous in duty, or better prepared in every respect, to repel, successfully, the encroachments of an invading enemy," during the late war. So much the more shame for us. Can it be denied that the enemy, during the late war, possessed themselves of a great portion of the Massachusetts territory? Where was then their zealous, well prepared troops—or rather, where were the officers to direct them? Truly we think the tour of the Gov. of Massachusetts would have been quite as well timed, had he repaired to his invaded territory, during the war, as this time; and many of us in this quarter, think it would have been a little better.

Boston papers report splendid military reviews, great order and discipline of Massachusetts militia, and the Governor's tour through the District of Maine. Southern papers slur Boston, prompting a Boston editor to defend Massachusetts troops' readiness during the late war. The text criticizes this, noting the enemy possessed much of Massachusetts territory during the war and questions where the zealous troops and officers were then, suggesting the Governor's tour would have been better during the war.
