FOR THE HERALD.

Solution of the Mathematical problem, in the Herald of Jan. 4th.—1299 acres contain 207840 square rods; and since this area is equal to the square of the side of the field which contains it, multiplied by the decimal ·433, it is evident that 207840 divided by ·433 will give the square of the side of the field; and it is equally obvious that the square root of the quotient will give the side itself. The operation, expressed in appropriate symbols is thus:—

2 1 207840= ·433=698 ·82032 nearly, which = the side of the field.
