Introduction from Kentucky Commonwealth presents a satirical poem by M. W. R. T. of Harrodsburg mocking female fortune hunters seeking wealthy Kentucky suitors. The poem 'A PRIZE' ironically depicts a Southern girl's allure through her vast, profitable lands yielding sugar, rice, cotton, and $50 per bale profit, contrasting with preference for local matches.

Full Text

From the Kentucky Commonwealth.
The following spirited and humorous sketch is from the pen of our accomplished friend, M. W. R. T. of Harrodsburg. It is evidently intended to satirize certain female fortune hunters who annually visit Kentucky, hoping to find the key to men's hearts by a shot of incalculable wealth. Our young men, fortunately for themselves are not so much captivated with cotton bales, as they are with good sense and polished manners; and on that score they have not much to gain by foreign alliances. Kentucky matches, after all, are the best for young Kentuckians, as they are the safest. Our state is so famous for "honest men and bonny lasses," that there are scarcely any thing else than "prizes" in our matrimonial lotteries,
A PRIZE.
A Southern girl, with a sunny eye,
Flashing and blue as an August sky
Wearing light braids of her shining hair,
Mode a la Grecque o'er her forehead fair;
And sweet smiling lips breathing rich bliss,
As fondest lovers only sigh'd to kiss;
And then that taper with pearl deck'd hand
May untie gyves to a bond green land
That far all our Texan dreams surpasses-
The soil's all sugar (the creeks molasses.)
That yields every year two crops of rice,
That always commands a ready price;
While swarms of negroes that work like ants.
Can gather the cotton from half they plant,
That grow like our forest tree, strong and tall.
Dropping pods as forests do leaves in the fall;
And lastly and best. you'll never fail
To pocket $50 cash! per bale!!!
