Nine Groups Await Outcome:
Last Big Push Tonight
Tonight, from 7 until 9 p.m., the Key West-Monroe County Community Chest will stage its last big push to raise money in this year's campaign.
Some 50 women will try to knock at every door in all Key West in this two-hour period as the annual drive, late in starting and lagging behind, tries to get enough funds to keep its nine member agencies going.
The goal is $50,000.
Only about $11,000 has been turned in.
Nine groups await the results of tonight's last big effort. Hundreds of girls and boys in the Girl and Boy Scouts, the N.C.C.S. and the Youth Center; hundreds of servicemen who use the Negro and white U.S.O.'s will be hurt or helped by Key Westers this evening.
The amount of your gift may decide whether the Salvation Army can furnish a bag of groceries to a hungry family, or clothes to a ragged child. It may determine whether the Red Cross can stage a holiday party for those in the Old Folks' Home or train someone in first aid that may save someone else's life. It may decide whether the Juvenile Council can put a roof over the head of some temporarily-homeless boy or girl.
If anyone's home is missed, a telephone call to Chest headquarters at 516 Southard St., CYpress 6-2063, shortly after 9 p.m. will be answered by someone who'll be very glad to get your donation.
Key West has had a rough winter—not so rough as many parts of Florida, but not as good as many winters past. Many appeals have been made for money and nobody has money to spare.
But we in Key West usually take care of our own, and these nine organizations, depending on this drive for the money to keep going, are very much our own.
The people they help are our next-door neighbors, our friends, our own sons and daughters. We hope this drive succeeds. We hope you'll help—all of you.
