IMPORTANT
Yesterday morning arrived at the quarantine ground, the ship Providence, Adams, of Providence, mounting thirty-four 24, 18 and 6 pounders, from Barcelona, loaded with wine and brandy. Col. E. Gardner, owner and supercargo of this Ship, has politely favoured us with the following minute:
"THE ship Providence, of Providence, Rhode-Island, Captain Adams, left Barcelona on the evening of 12th June. On the 20th off west end of Majorca, spoke the British frigate Sea-Horse, having on board General Abercrombie, and three other, English Generals, together with a company of artillery: they parted the day before from a fleet from Gibraltar, having troops on board for Minorca, or some other place in the Mediterranean. By a gentleman who left Cette on the 7th of June, information was received that the blockade of Genoa was raised; on which account there were great rejoicings in France; and all the Genoese vessels immediately taken into employ. Information was also received of the success of the French armies on the Rhine, and by several accounts from Cadiz, Marseilles and Paris, the American Commissioners had closed the business of their mission with the deputies of the French nation, and waited only the assent of the Chief Consul, who was then absent from Paris, with the army in Piedmont; it was said and believed, with a full determination of restoring to his crown, the King of Sardinia."
Passed Gibraltar 3d July, at 10 A. M.
On the 28th, latitude 34, 30, longitude 69, 50, spoke the schooner Favourite Elsey, M'Connell, 9 days from Norfolk, bound to Jamaica; and the 1st August fell in with the British sloop of war, the Pheasant, who sent a boat on board, and would have persuaded us to have allowed him to carry us into Halifax; but which we declined he pursued us 56 hours, then left us."
