Frances Alda Will Appear at Morgantown February 15.
Much interest is centered in musical circles in the Monongahela valley over the coming of Madame Frances Alda, the famous soprano vocalist, to Morgantown February 15, at the Swisher theater, under the auspices of the University Choral Society.
The decision of Madam Frances Alda to devote a second season to concerting gives American music-lovers another opportunity to hear one of the best lyric sopranos of the present day. For several years Madame Alda has been a favorite at the Metropolitan opera house, winning equal popularity in the Boston and Chicago opera companies.
When her operatic engagements so arranged that an extended concert tour is possible, the country at large is greatly the gainer.
Frances Alda, although of English parentage, is a native of New Zealand. She studied in Melbourne, after her first studies in her native country, and then became a pupil of Marchesi in Paris. Her debut was made at the Opera Comique in "Manon," a role in "Damnation of Faust" and "Mephistopheles." Her Brussels engagement was followed by one at Covent Garden, London, under Campanini, where she sang with Caruso in 'Rigoletto.' Madame Alda was then called to Italy, where she sang with Bonci. During this performance Gatti-Casazza and Toscanini heard her and engaged her to create 'Louise' at La Scala, where she made another hit and took part in a series of important revivals.
From Italy Madame Alda went to Buenos Ayres, returning to Paris, after a successful engagement, to accept a three years' contract at the grand opera. It was during this engagement that she received her contract for the Metropolitan opera house. Her American triumphs are a matter of recent history.
Madame Alda's repertoire includes a score of operas. Arias from which, together with an extended list of French, Italian, German and English songs, will figure in her recital programs and disclose the purity of her style, her control over legato, her marked musical intelligence and her splendid equipment as a concert singer.
