HOW THE BIRDS WERE FED.
Katherine Pruce. (Age 12.)
During the winter I cared for the little birds by feeding them bird seed and bread crumbs.
It was the day before Christmas so my sister and I went to the woods for a tree. We brought two home with us, and mother decided on the largest, and I stood the other out in the yard.
I looked out of the window and saw it was full of snow birds. Just then a happy thought struck me.
I ran to the pantry and took some bread, suet, apples, raisins and string. Then I cut the apples in pieces, the bread in pieces and the suet. I tied string on all of them and hung them all over the tree.
Then I returned to the house and we stood in the window to see what would happen.
Soon a little bird flew to the tree and began eating. First it tasted of the apples, then the raisins, and so on, until it had eaten some of every thing. It then flew off.
But soon it returned, it was not alone this time for there were eight or nine other birds with it. They flew straight to the tree and began eating.
They feasted for a while and then flew away.
I ran out to see if they had eaten all. The tree was nearly bare of food and so the next day I put fresh food out and they came again.
I did this every day until the snow was gone. Then they came no more.
