Made For The Teachers
In the closing hours of the Virginia Assembly the State Senate and the House of Delegates both passed by rather decisive votes an increase from the state for teachers' salaries. In round figures each county, Dickenson included, will receive about $50 extra for each teacher unit from state revenue. A rough estimate would indicate that Dickenson County will receive from the state to augment teachers' salaries about $6,800.
The Assembly also specified that this increase from state funds did not license school officials in counties to make a corresponding cut in the county's share. It is our understanding that regardless of what the county is paying teachers from its own sources of revenue that the amount of money coming from the state is to increase the county's fund for paying teachers. This is the spirit of the law, and it is our firm belief that the representatives of the people assembled in Richmond, including our own, voted for an increase in teachers' salaries and not to provide a loop hole whereby local school bodies can finance transportation and more school buildings. It was voted for the teachers and the teachers should have the increase in pay.
