Extract of a letter from on board the Earl of Holdernesse, which arrived at Madras the 2d of Sept. last.

The report that the French had taken Bencoolen was true; but they soon quitted it on the arrival of the Osterley, Capt. Vincent, Worcester, Capt. Hall, and Prince George, Capt. Rose, bound there, and to China: The supercargoes and commanders agreed, that the Osterley should remain there, and the other two proceed to China; but first they landed their troops, and are repairing the houses, &c. and reinstating the Settlement.
