Full Text
It appears very strange that as William Perry has been robbed of life, certain persons and newspapers should labor so zealously to deprive him of the reputation of his political principles—principles that he steadfastly adhered to up to the very moment of his death! To effect this end a pitiful quibble is resorted to. We are informed that there is a William Perry, a city watchman, residing in Locust Ward, who is opposed to us, and is enrolled on the list of Bankites: and another opponent whose name much resembles that of the deceased. These are the men spoken of by the Bankites. Was it to cast an odium on the friends of the administration, by endeavoring to substantiate the unmanly charges of the Bank presses of this city against them that the inquiry was instituted?
We sincerely trust, that this melancholy occurrence will have the effect of inducing the sober and reflecting part of the opposition to cause the resolution recommending the closing of their stores and workshops on the day of the general election to be rescinded, and a recurrence of such scenes as disgraced the city on Friday, prevented.
