We this morning received the following vindication of Miss Martineau, which we readily insert.-- We now entertain doubts of the truth of the statement made in Garrison's Liberator, that Miss M. had attended an abolition meeting at the North, and must, of course, disbelieve that the lady expressed herself at that meeting in the manner reported. The following statement is from most respectable authority:
'The Editor of the Patriot is requested to state, in vindication of the large circle who showed her hospitality: that while Miss Martineau resided in Charleston, she professedly maintained reserve on the subject of slavery, unless her opinion was asked; when called upon she frankly expressed her well known views of slavery in general, but was equally decided in her disapprobation of the movements of the immediate abolitionists. Lamenting their prejudice and ignorance, and promising to use her efforts to dispel them.'
