"Rok 'N Roll" Clan Rocks And Rolls Driver

ELYRIA, O. -(INS)- Truck driver, Charles B. Scharch of Fort Worth, Ind., probably still is a bit punchy from his crude initiation by Bill Haley's Comets and some 70 other entertainers into the ranks of the "Rok'n Roll" clan.

It seems that Scharch was resting peacefully in the cab of his truck at the middle ridge service plaza on the Ohio Turnpike, near Elyria, when a busload of "rock'n rollers" pulled up in a bus in front of the restaurant.

All of the entertainers-including Haley and his gang, the Comets, the teenagers, the Platters and the Teen Queens-pulled Scharch from his truck and initiated him into the clan by bouncing him off the side of the bus and truck.

Queens alighted from the bus with the exception of a vocalist, 20-year-old Betty Collins of Santa Monica, Cal.
From that point on, the accounts are a bit hazy, but the highway patrol reports that when Miss Collins finally got off the bus, the truck driver made "a smart remark," raising the girl's ire.
"We had words," she told patrolmen, "and then he jumped out and knocked me down. I shouted for help."
Hearing her scream, the entire troupe barged out of the restaurant and picked up the beat. They swarmed around Scharch, who was "rocked" and "rolled" into unconsciousness.
He was taken to nearby Amherst hospital, where he regained his senses. After making a statement to police, in which he denied making a remark to Miss Collins, Scharch shook hands with the entertainers some three hours later and continued his trip. No charges were filed by either party.
