Destructive FIRE—LOSS OF THE STEAMER CHEROKEE.—The splendid steamship Cherokee, owned by Aspinwall & Co., took fire at her dock, in New York, on Friday evening, and was entirely destroyed. The ship was loaded to her utmost capacity, with a rich and valuable cargo, consisting in part of silks, drugs, oils, spirits, &c., and was to sail for New Orleans on Saturday morning, via Havana. The fire is supposed to have originated from some of the drugs, in the after cabin, and was beyond all control when first discovered. That portion of the cargo which had been placed on deck, was thrown overboard, and thus saved in a damaged state; but all below was burnt to the water. The loss of vessel and cargo is estimated at $500,000. No insurance on the vessel, and very little on the cargo.
