[Correspondence of The Cecil Whig.]
ROCKVILLE, LITTLE ELK, Dec. 26, '55.
Improvement of the County—School—Debating Society-Clerical Change—Stores-Mechanics-"Sam," &c.
Dear Ricketts:—Being a subscriber to your paper and feeling an interest in it I am pleased to see your various letters from Port. Rising Sun, and other places, and seeing none from Little Elk, I have concluded to send you one.
There is a great improvement in this section of the county-persons who lived here ten years ago would now scarcely know it. The general face of the country is altered stock of all kinds has been greatly improved, and the manners and customs of the people are so changed for the better, that I think we could stand up with any part of the county and report progress.
We have a day-school of about 50 scholars at the Rock School House, taught by Mr. James Kelly, a man of great intellect. A Debating Society meets at the same place every Saturday evening, conducted by Messrs. Mackie, Jordan, Cornish, Howard and others I have attended many such societies but never saw more talent displayed than at this.
The Rev. Mr. Marshall has been called to take the Rock (Presbyterian) Church formerly in charge of Rev. Abraham De Witt.
Everything here seems at present to wear a smiling appearance; our stores at the Rock, Fair Hill and Andora compare well with any country stores, and our mechanics are equal to the best.
"Sam" is still at work here and the Pierce ites are growing scarcer, and the few of our old whigs who voted the Pierce ticket look as though they dreaded to reside up Salt River.
