The State Fair opens to-day and it promises to be the most successful yet held. It is the common testimony of visitors who have attended all the large fairs of the country that the Wheeling fair does not suffer by comparison, and in many of its features excels.
This year the managers have offered more liberal inducements to exhibitors and made considerable outlay in improving the grounds and beautifying the surroundings. That they will meet with the encouragement they deserve is not questioned. The Wheeling people should not be satisfied with allowing the strangers who will be attracted to our city to enjoy the fair alone, but they should visit it themselves and take in the magnitude of the exhibition.
Fairs, especially the Wheeling fairs, are great educators. The location is unsurpassed, being in the center of a rich agricultural country. The stock exhibited is among the finest raised, and every year sees some improvement over the other.
The speed entries promise a week of fine racing sport while the household, art and other attractions will be up to the standard. The fair has improved as a market and offers advantages that are seldom enjoyed in any other section of the country. It is one of the institutions of Wheeling that the citizens should take great pride in, not altogether from a selfish standpoint, but on account of the fame it enjoys throughout the length and breadth of the land.
