Iron Guardists Fire Upon Train as it Nears Border Of Jugoslavia
BUCHAREST, Sept. 7 — (UP)-A band of more than 100 Iron Guardists, dressed in green shirts and heavily armed, attempted to assassinate abdicated King Carol II tonight as the train bearing him to exile sped toward the Jugoslavian frontier.

The would-be assassins, seeking revenge against the former monarch upon whose orders hundreds of their leaders had been slain in Rumania's recent bloody past, attempted to stop the train at Timisora station near the border.

The train picked up speed and hurtled through the station but some of the Iron Guardists succeeded in boarding it. A running gun battle, American wild west style, ensued in which hundreds of shots were exchanged between guards on the train and the attackers.

No casualties were reported.

VASSAL STATE
The assault took place as Dictator Ion Antonescu was rallying his followers to the task of reconstructing the dismembered nation as a German vassal state.

Antonescu, ordering the arrest of high functionaries who were among Carol's aides, called upon the nation, in religious ceremonies Sunday, to "lay a curse" upon the King who, he charged, had brought the nation to the brink of disaster.

The attack on Carol's train started at 4:20 p. m. (8:20 a. m. CST). The Iron Guards swarmed into the station at Timsora at 3:15 p. m and took the station master prisoner shutting him up in his office.

OPEN FIRE
As the exiles train passed through the attackers opened fire some boarded the locomotive and others followed in another train. Still others pursued in automobiles.

The fight continued from Timisora to the frontier town of Jimbola. Carol's train it was reported, was forced to stop briefly at one point in the battle, but his guards managed to fight off their assailants, and the ex-King escaped over the border into Jugoslavia.

It was reported that the captured station master at Timisora had managed to flash orders to the engineers of Carol's train to speed up as it approached
