Benny Leonard may have to pass up two important matches because he hurt his left hand in the fifth round of his bout with Chick Simler of Scranton at the Empire A. C. last night. From the fifth on Leonard could only paw with his left, and not until it is examined by a physician to-day will he know the extent of the injury. There is a chance that the hand is broken, and in that case it will be several weeks before he is able to resume boxing. Billy Gibson, Leonard's manager, had him signed up to box Johnny Harvey at the Manhattan Casino next week, and Ritchie Mitchell in Milwaukee, and he'll have to call off both matches.
The Clermont A. C. will conduct a matinee to-morrow. Billy Miske, the popular fighter from St. Paul, will box Gunboat Smith, who is returning to the ring after a two months' rest.
Because of the inability of the new Garden Club to get a license to conduct bouts, Johnny Dundee will box Eddie Wallace at the Broadway Sporting Club of Brooklyn to-morrow afternoon. Dundee was to have met Champion Welsh at the re-opening of the big amphitheatre.
Billy McDonald and his crack lightweight, Irish Patsy Cline, returned from Columbus, O., to-day, where Cline easily outpointed Bobby Waugh Tuesday night. Cline immediately went to Billy Grupp's Gym to train for his bout with Phil Bloom at the Broadway Sporting Club Saturday night.
Billy De Foe, who boxes Willie Jones of Brooklyn at the Fairmont A. C. Saturday night, was to-day signed up for a return bout with Tommy Tuohy, over whom he scored a sensational knockout some months ago. They'll meet at the Harlem Sporting Club Dec. 8 on the same bill with Allie Nack and Young Fulton.
Mickey Dunn, the aggressive Harlem bantamweight, has been matched to box Dick Loadman at Buffalo Dec. 8. Loadman Monday night scored an easy victory in a fifteen round bout with Champion Ertle.
John Reisler announces that he has cut Young Lustig from his string. "Lustig and Larry Hansen were ordered from the ring at Providence last week for not trying," said Reisler, "and I don't want any boys under my management who are not when the gong sounds."
Charlie White and Chick Simler, who put up such a creditable battle at the Empire A. C. last night, have practically been matched to box at the Manhattan Casino Dec. 6. Simler made a great hit by his courageous showing against Leonard.
Louis Magnolia, who has been refereeing at the Harlem Sporting Club for some time, will not referee Friday night's bout between Charlie White and Stanley Yoakum. Kid McPartland, the old-time boxer, who formerly acted as the club referee, will again be seen in that capacity.
Bob Moha, who claims he was not in the best of form when he recently lost to Billy Miske, says he will give a better account of himself to-morrow afternoon at the Pioneer Sporting Club, where he boxes Bartley Madden of Jersey City. Tommy Tuohy and Eddie McEntee will box the ten-round semi-final.
The Queensboro A. C. has arranged a good card for Saturday night. Silent Martin and Sailor Maher will be the performers in the star bout, while in the other ten Corona Kid and Battling Chuck will meet.
Eddie Kelley, the promising Bronx lightweight, returned from Philadelphia to-day, where he decisively defeated Eddie Wagner, the Quaker star, Monday night. Kelly boxes Jimmy Flynn of Long Island at the Fairmont A. C. Saturday night and also counts on winning this battle.
John Kirk, manager of the New Polo A. A. of Harlem, has arranged a good card for Friday evening consisting of three fours, two sixes and one star ten-round bout. In the first six Young Toodie of Harlem will swap punches with Young Grace of Harlem. The other six will bring together Young Guarani of Hoboken and Bobby Mack, middleweight of Bayonne. The star attraction will bring together Danny Foy, Irish featherweight champion, and Young Patty, a promising featherweight of Paterson.
Teddy Jacobs, the popular east side bantam, has been matched to box Kid Taylor of Brooklyn in a return battle at the Broadway Sporting Club on Saturday, Dec. 9.
Willie Beecher, the east side lightweight, has been signed up by John Weismantel, matchmaker of the Broadway Sporting Club, to box Shamus O'Brien Saturday night, Dec. 16.
Golf Notes.
The professionals are starting to go South for the winter. More than thirty of them will soon be sojourning in the land of the magnolias and sunshine. The professionals who will go to Pinehurst are Donald Ross, Alec Ross, Herbert Lagerblade and John Peacock. Augusta, Ga., also will use a galaxy of wise golf instructors, as Alec Ogilvie of St. Andrews, Dave Ogilvie of Morris County and Seymour Dunn of Lake Placid will be at Augusta before the snow flies.
Thomas will take over the new course just finished at Miami, Fla. Jack Davidson of Woodmere will be in charge at the old course at Miami. George Low, the Baltusrol expert and friend of the duffer, is to help make attractive the new course at St. Augustine, Fla. Alec Smith and his brother George are bound for Belair, Fla.
