PUBLIC IMPROVEMENT.
Mr. Editor—There is perhaps no local subject to which the attention of our Citizens might be called, and none in which their aid would be of greater public utility than to the state of our streets. The principal or Main Street is, without question, one of the most muddy spots, for its distance, to be found upon any of the public roads from Northampton to Boston, and this is in fact, the common observation or remark of travellers. Why is this suffered to remain so? Is there no remedy? Is there no such thing at the present day as "reform," or have our citizens such a dread of the sound of the word as not to pay attention to ascertain the application in which it is used? We have heard much of late upon "roads and reforms;" but as this is beyond doubt a "local" road, we will only ask the attention of our "local" citizens. Can any one observe our fine side walks, and our "to be" lamps, and not be surprised that something is not done to improve the roads? I highly approve of our walks, and the lighting of the street, and, thanks to our enterprising Inhabitants for these two great improvements which we are to enjoy this winter, and the coming spring; but I would rather wish something might be done to prevent travellers from getting into an almost inexorable situation, than to afford them any light aid to get out again. Believing any remarks upon the state of our street road are entirely superfluous, as all will concur in the propriety of doing something to make them more easy for travellers, as well as pleasant and convenient for ourselves, I will drop the subject, with a strong desire and hope, that some of our influential citizens will make a strong effort to "amend their ways." and certain I am our wealthy and liberal Inhabitants would liberally second their efforts, and thus prove themselves worthy of the thanks of all friends to

Main Argument
the main street is excessively muddy and in need of reform; citizens should improve the roads to make travel easier, complementing recent sidewalk and lighting upgrades.
