MEMORANDUM for Sept. 1813
The Summer is ended, the harvest of
martial glory is past for this season, and
Canada is not taken.

"Should the present season not admit of
complete success (on the Lakes) the progress
made will ensure for the next a naval ascendency,
where it is essential to our permanent peace with
and control over the savages."

Mr. Madison's Message, 4th Nov. 1812.

assurance, when he gave this pledge to
the people of conquering the Freedom
of the Lakes the present year—but how
