Serious truths--in short metre.--Our nation has been led in a wrong and fatal track, and is plunged at last into a labyrinth of difficulties. Nor is there any other way of escaping ruin, but to retrace its steps. It must return to the honest magnanimous policy of Washington: else it is lost. This truth is made so clear by woful experience that all must see it. But with many, "here's the rub." A change of policy would be a tacit confession of error. It would wound the pride of opinion. It would weaken the predominant party. It would gratify federalists. Perchance it might put power in their hands. This they are determined to oppose with all their might, let what will come. Like the false mother, they would rather slay the child, than restore it to the right owner.
What a spirit! To prefer the general good to the interests of individuals or of party, is the great hinge of political virtue. Nothing short of this deserves the name of patriotism. Its opposite with whatever specious pretences it may be covered is the genuine spirit of faction; and faction in a republic is the mother of despotism.--Con. Jour.
