SENATOR FLINGS BITTER WORDS AT RETIRING CHIEF EXECUTIVE.
Washington, Mar. 3.—Chairman McLean of the senate banking committee struck back at John Skelton Williams, retiring comptroller of the currency who in his letter of resignation to the president, made public last night, charged that the senator had prevented his confirmation by the senate.
"Williams had every opportunity to disprove the charges against his confirmation," McLean said in a formal statement. "Weeks were occupied in the taking of testimony. The hearings were public and the testimony printed.
The committee voted against reporting his nomination back to the senate and as chairman of the committee it was my duty to act accordingly.
"It is now Williams privilege to abuse the court and as that court was composed of senators. it is to be expected that he will have the cordial cooperation of the chief executive. Outside of Williams reprehensible conduct in office, it must be borne in mind that there was an election last November and his letter to the president would indicate that he is a poor loser."
