…One of the most prominent features in the bad fortune of the French is. the desertion of Dumourier. His conduct re-calls to every one's mind the ever memorable treason of your Arnold. Such is the vast magnitude of the combination against France—a combination not to be equalled in the annals of mankind, that one thinks it impossible for the new republic long to withstand it. In this combination of all the powers of Europe, the most formidable and determined is England. John Bull no longer talks of merely beating the French as formerly, but of absolute extermination, or a complete restoration of royalty, the nobility, and the clergy.
Since I wrote to you, a great change has taken place in Ireland. The sound of reformation and of liberty is no longer heard. Every writer, printer, or publisher, who dares to whisper a sentiment hostile to the present system of coercion, is both fined and imprisoned, either by the usual courts of justice, or by the Secret Committee of the House of Lords. To carry the system into effect, a great military force has been brought into the country and a body of sixteen thousand militia is now raising, to enforce the measures of what is emphatically termed "a strong government."
So intent is England on the Conquest of France, that the infamous dismemberment of Poland is hardly mentioned. It has been thought by some, that if the combined tyrants can effectually subdue France. they intend to parcel out your country among them—and thus extinguish every spark of liberty in the world.

Event Details
The letter highlights Dumourier's desertion as a major blow to France, compared to Arnold's treason, amid a massive European coalition led by England seeking France's extermination or royal restoration. In Ireland, reform and liberty sentiments are silenced through coercion, fines, imprisonments by courts or the House of Lords' Secret Committee, with military forces and 16,000 militia raised for a 'strong government.' England's focus on conquering France overshadows Poland's dismemberment, with fears that a subdued France could lead to America's partition by tyrants.
