THE FOG CLEARED UP—THE QUESTION OF VERACITY SETTLED

Never perhaps in the whole history of litigated questions, involving the accuracy of individual opinion and the character of man for veracity, was there ever so perfect and triumphant a vindication as in the case of Judge Upshur against the accusation of Mr. Botts that he was "an unqualified disunionist"

The Hudibrastic lines

"Whether aimed at duck or plover.
It shot and kicked the shooter over,"

never found a worthier object than the Hon. John Minor Botts in this particular case—his charge is disproved beyond all controversy and the possibility even of reclamation forever hereafter—a perfect extinguisher has been placed by the manly and dignified reply of Judge Upshur upon the little rush light—his enemies raised to brand him as an enemy to the Union. It seems that Mr. Harrison, though a bitter enemy of the Judge, had the indelicacy not only to give testimony against him, but himself to become an accuser, and to relate conversations entirely confidential; no testimony yet adduced by Mr. Botts would be received in a Court of Justice. The cross examination by Judge Upshur has demonstrated this beyond all doubt.
